About the West Orange, New Jersey Area 

If you’re looking for a combination of great value, ease of commute to New York City, and the serenity of the suburbs, West Orange will meet and even exceed expectations.  

Thomas A. Edison put the township on the map when he moved his operations here in 1887. His West Orange laboratory brought us items such as the movie camera, sound movies and the alkaline electric storage battery. You can tour his lab and grounds, located on Main Street at the Edison National Historic Site.  

West Orange is welcoming. You will find shops, wonderful restaurants a movie theater and of course the new favorite -- the largest Whole Foods Market in the area. No need to venture out of the township, unless you want to take a short trip into New York. Families will especially enjoy the Turtle Back Zoo, which, in addition to an impressive collection of animals, has year-round exhibits and activities designed for kids. For you skating and hockey fans, West Orange is home to Codey Arena, a venue for skating and non-skating family activities, and it’s the official training facility of the Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils.  

The township is comprised of neighborhoods with rolling hills, green landscape and homes offering expansive views of the New York skyline. You’ll find homes dating from the 19th century as well as a selection of pre-war Tudor-style and post-war suburban styles. As you head “up the hill,” which is actually up Prospect Avenue, you’ll find mostly post-war style homes along with shopping areas and golf courses.  

To the northwest is Eagle Rock Reservation, a 400 plus acre reservation with horse trails, hiking trails and a lookout where visitors have a spectacular view of the New York Skyline.  

Schools:
West Orange has a vast selection of both public and private schools with excellent reputations. The Washington Post has ranked the district among the top 1% of schools in the nation.  

Without a doubt, one of the best reasons to live in Northern New Jersey is ease of commute into the city while still enjoying the many benefits of suburban living. Whether commuting for work or play, you’ll find these transportation schedules invaluable.  

West Orange Shuttle Service to the Midtown Direct train is provided Monday thru Friday except on Major Holidays as determined by New Jersey Transit. Schedule is updated on the township’s transportation page.
